Vitamin C Day

Next Saturday, 4 April 2026

National Vitamin C Day is celebrated on April 4 to talk about one of the most essential nutrients that is crucial for maintaining our overall health.

Vitamin C is a silent warrior who helps us in many wonderful ways, from boosting our immunity to improving the body’s natural repair functions.

Even though it sounds complicated, vitamin C is found abundantly in our daily lives, like in citrus fruits, leafy greens, berries, and so on.

National Vitamin C Day reminds us that healthier choices can help us lead a better and sustainable life with even the smallest ingredients.

A skincare company known by the name SkinCeuticals created this day in 2019 to promote the benefits of vitamin C and raise awareness about its significance in our skin and overall health.

Vitamin C And Its Intriguing History

The history of vitamin C is a goldmine of fascinating stories and events, as it was closely associated with an ancient disease, scurvy.

Vitamin C has been an important part of studying and treating the disease. Famous people like Hippocrates, Strabo, and Pliny the Elder wrote about scurvy in their early works.

Scurvy was mentioned as one of the major causes of deaths among sailors during the Age of Exploration, and citrus fruits were slowly identified as an effective remedy.

Expeditions such as that of Vasco da Gama demonstrated the benefits of citrus, and in 1747, James Lind conducted one of the first controlled experiments, proving that oranges and lemons could prevent the disease.

Irrespective of this discovery, citrus juice was adopted much later in naval practice, and that too when the British Royal Navy formally introduced it in 1796.

Casimir Funk played a major role in improving the scientific understanding in the early 20th century. He proposed the concept of vitamins in 1912, and Albert Szent-Györgyi separated vitamin c.

He, then, together with Joseph L. Svirbely and Charles Glen King, identified it as the anti-scorbutic factor.

In 1933, Walter Norman Haworth determined its chemical structure and synthesized it, naming it ascorbic acid.

These developments enabled scientists to produce vitamin C on a large scale and established its essential role in preventing scurvy and supporting human health.
