Niagara Falls is famous for doing one thing consistently: never stopping. For over 12,000 years, it has thundered non-stop, carving rock and mesmerizing millions. Except… for one day.

On March 29, 1848, the impossible happened, Niagara Falls ran dry. Not slowed. Not frozen. Completely stopped. And the story behind it feels straight out of a movie. This is why Niagara Falls Runs Dry Day is on March 29

History of Niagara Falls Runs Dry Day

The Day Nature Hit Pause (1848)

In the early hours of March 29, 1848, a rare combination of weather events caused a natural phenomenon:

  • Strong winds pushed massive ice sheets from Lake Erie
  • These ice chunks jammed at the mouth of the Niagara River
  • The river flow was completely blocked

The result? No water reached the falls for nearly 30 hours! Both the American Falls and Horseshoe Falls were left dry- something never seen before or since. People woke up confused, stunned, and even terrified. Some believed it was a sign of the apocalypse.

The Second “Dry Run” (1969- Human Intervention)

While 1848 was nature’s doing, humans recreated something similar in 1969.

  • Engineers built a massive rock dam (cofferdam)
  • Water was diverted away from the American Falls
  • The falls stayed nearly dry for five months

Why? To study erosion and remove dangerous rock buildup at the base of the falls. Scientists discovered that the rocks actually helped stabilize the waterfall so they left them in place.

Interesting Facts You Did Not Know

  • When the falls dried in 1848, locals literally walked across the riverbed, uncovering old relics, muskets, and artifacts.
  • Niagara Falls is known for its constant thunder. When it stopped, the sudden silence was so eerie that many people panicked.
  • Engineers used around 28,000 tons of rock to divert the river in 1969, an insane engineering feat.
  • The 1848 event remains the only time in recorded history when Niagara Falls completely stopped due to natural causes
